I am 53 year old English male and at the beginning of 2015 I weighed an extreme 174kgs (280lbs, or 27 stone and 5lb).
I have been overweight since the end of my serious sporting career which included rowing and rugby in my teens and early twenties. I gained weight quickly and have been yo-yo-ing ever since having tried, amongst others, the Atkins and Paleo diets, and a gastric balloon. I have combined each with intense 5 days a week exercise. I achieved success with each but then ballooned back up, often to an even higher weight.
As a result of my obesity I have hypertension, had become pre diabetic and endured both sore knees and joints seriously impacting my mobility.
At the beginning of this year I committed to undertake a 200 km cycle challenge on a mountain bike in Mexico to raise money for three children’s charities, to be completed in November 2015. Clearly at 174 kgs and with a BMI of well over 50 this would be dangerous if not impossible. I therefore committed to losing significant weight during the year.
Disappointingly, with my own efforts, I only managed to lose 3 kgs during the first six months of the year so decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery. After considerable research I selected a highly respected UK based surgeon who was associated with QLMC. As a result I joined the QLMC programme in July in preparation for the operation that was scheduled for 1 August 2015.
As part of the programme I met with QLMC’s General Practictioner, DrZainaHabrawi, their Clinical Exercise Therapist, Haig Balekian and their Clinical Dietitian ChirineWatfa.
Following the consultations with each and based on their diagnosis and advice we agreed collectively that rather than resorting to surgery immediately I should try a closely supervised diet and exercise programme to allow me to lose the weight safely and healthily whilst building my fitness to a level at which I could safely undertake the challenge.
Throughout the process I was impressed by the professionalism of all of the team at QLMC and was pleasantly surprised that they effectively advised me, carefully considering my interests and situation, rather than recommending surgery which would have made the clinic significantly more profit.
Having agreed to work together I met with Chirine weekly and followed her programme closely and was able to lose 15kgs over 3. 5 months whilst undertaking an aggressive exercise programme. She was highly responsive to my issues during the process and also sympathetic and supportive.
I am now able to confirm that from 18th to 21st November 2015 I successfully completed the 200km cycle challenge. My fitness proved up to the task and I finished strongly. I am also pleased to say that I have also seen markedly improved blood readings and am no longer pre diabetic.
I credit my success to the expert input and support of the QLMC team.
I have been so impressed that I have engaged with the team to take me from my current 155 kgs to my ambitious target by year end 2016 of 120kgs.
I should also mention that as a result of the above my wife and I have also used the QLMC Dermatologist Dr Liga Jacevica and the Dentist Dr. Mohamed Bachir and have also been very happy with these. I am now very happy to recommend friends to use QLMC.
